Mysterious Girl Era? How About No.

Honestly, the yearning and chase to arrive at a place where you can self-proclaim yourself as “mysterious” reeks of desperation. It is inauthentic, manufactured, and self-abnegating. A locking of self within a prison that no one called you to. Those who are innately mysterious are not this calculative of their moves, this manipulative of their image, this denying of themselves. They are just mysterious.

What is it about yourself that you dislike so bad, that you’ve been told isn’t good, that you’ve been made to believe you need to water down to be more “attractive”? Attractive, not solely in the sense of romantic appeal or physical appearance, but in all-around desirability.

Who convinced you that hiding away is the best way to achieve what you want? Who told you that keeping your talents and skills to yourself will help you in life? My dear, that sounds like deception to me, like straight sabotage (and we all know who the biggest deceiver of man is).

In a culture so obsessed with curating online images of ourselves that are insincere to who we naturally are, “mysteriousness” has become a rat race. Many are missing out on opportunities, divine encounters, and chance meetings, all behind the guise of being mysterious.

Picture this: there is a girl, beautiful (inside and out), talented, intelligent, a force to be reckoned with. She sits on her talent, hiding it away, unable to show the beautiful paintings she makes, or the processes by which she makes them, because if she does, guess what, the mystery is gone.

Picture the testimonies she sits on, the stories she can tell. The pain in her journey that can rescue someone else on theirs. She’ll never tell it, though, guess why? Because it takes away her mystique.

Do you recall the story of the servant in the Bible who was given one talent but chose to hide it away due to fear? (Matthew 25: 14-30). Verse 18 reads, “But he who had received one talent went and dug in the ground and hid his master’s money”. The servant then appears to his master, saying, “I was afraid, and I went and hid your talent in the ground. Here, you have what is yours” (verse 25). In which the master responded in the following verse, “You wicked and slothful servant…”. Yeah, let’s not follow those footsteps. There is a strong stench of fear there.

And yes, that’s it, your desire to be mysterious is fear disguised as a new friend, surprise! :)

It is fear that whispers in your ear and tells you not to share certain things that could be a blessing, fear that tries to minimize your gifts and talents, fear that wants to keep you stagnant in the same place. It is fear that causes you to be disobedient to what God told you to do.

Do you know what is on the other side of that fear? A testimony, a blessing, a breakthrough.

There are consequences when we do not steward what God has given us correctly. There is a price to pay when we lean on our own understandings and do not acknowledge God in all our ways. Our paths become crooked, meandering, and lack a destination.

You have been given the responsibility of stewardship; instead of listening to the flesh and scheming up ways to be mysterious, listen to the spirit and learn how to steward well.

Share the gift with those God has called you to share the gift with, it is not yours alone to enjoy. He blesses us so we can be a blessing to others. Do not be selfish; your life is not your own.

You want be be mysterious, but we are to reflect the character of God, God reveals what He needs to reveal, and He conceals what needs to be concealed. That is how we are to be as well. If you truly desire a private life, use that as a model instead, and not the latest Instagram influencer in the blogs. To maintain privacy, share the gift and keep your personal life. With wisdom, keep private your relationships, your finances (unless there is a testimony there for someone), your children, your ins and outs, and so on.

Essentially, what I am trying to say is, mystery in and of itself is not a bad thing; we are just going about it wrong. God wants to use the things that you are hiding away, but you are too worried about maintaining a curated image that, honestly, no one truly cares about.

This so-called “mysterious girl era” can unintentionally become one of the darkest times of your life if not gone about correctly. Do not suffocate under the weight of mystery when you know there are things within you dying to be set free.

“No, that is one too many posts, no, I can’t let them know this part of me”, and so on.

It sounds so silly, doesn’t it?

Mystery is also commonly confused with isolation. The more friends, the less mysterious you are. The more people in your life, the more they know about you.

Isolation is the devil’s playing ground. It is there that there is no one else to save you, or even know that you need saving. It is in that place that he can plague your mind with lies and have you living in hidden sin. But that’s okay, right? So mysterious, so chic.

Some people do mystery right, though! Like I had mentioned, those who are innately mysterious and aren’t trying to become it. This isn’t for them. This is for the girls who run to mystery to run from something else, be it a calling from God, or a gift they were blessed with. What that something you’re running from is, that is for you to ponder.

If God has given you something to share, share it. Or sit and watch “mysteriously” as someone else does it instead, haha.

Anyways, with love, always,

Nessa.
